About me

Razan Alwazir

A passionate and detail-oriented student at the University of Brighton studying Media Industry and Innovation, I enjoy approaching complex projects that are meaningful and creative with an all-inclusive approach that inspires me to learn and enhance my current skills. A large part of my achievement comes from my capability to work with people, which stems from my ability to cultivate an intuitive understanding of others and their needs. I lead projects from there by fully devoting myself and skills to every given opportunity or experience.

Live project

For my final year of University, I completed a live project which combined a hands-on practical element where I worked with an organization on a current project. As a current university student and a previous student ambassador of the University of Brighton, I take great interest in encouraging prospective students to join the University on open days where applicants come to our campus and see the facilities, speak to current students and students and hear about different courses, etc. However, with the global impact of COVID-19 and the restrictions to represent my university and my course as I did in previous years, my interest has shifted to researching how to reach out to these potential students virtually.

My recent role as a student ambassador, which included providing guidance to prospective students and learning about their enquires about joining the university, has inspired me to conduct my live project/dissertation on ways higher education institutions could best utilize their social media platforms to reach prospective students. This in turn led to the research question: How can higher education institutions utilize social media to attract prospective students?

The research undertaken examined:

  • General social media use of student applicants

  • Use of TikTok in particular of applicant demographic

  • A critical review of competitor analysis of other Universities

  • Review of advice the University of Brighton commissioned from a digital agency

  • Guidance from TikTok on the potential value of their platform

In addition to examining previous research in related fields and applying media research methods the findings, whilst having no concrete answer to my question, have been used to enhance the way HEIs use social platforms and will be used to contribute to the student recruitment process.
